🚨 Recruiting Advice for PM Internships
Here are a few helpful recruiting tips I’ve gathered from many PMs and PM interns!
Tailor your resume towards PM roles
Try to focus on and emphasize initiative, decision-making, outcomes, and metrics. Highlight technical skills that are often useful in PM roles such as data visualization and database languages. Good soft skills to emphasize include negotiation, strong verbal and written communication, stakeholder alignment, adaptability, and empathy.
Keep up to date with industry/tech news
This is helpful for answering a question that’s asked by many interviewers “What are you most excited about in the tech industry right now?” In addition, being familiar with the product or industry means you can show your industry knowledge and your ability to understand the respective user needs and business goals — even better, show that you’re interested in the company and its current projects.
In product-thinking questions, ask clarifying questions
Don’t be afraid to ask lots of clarifying questions in product-thinking questions. It can help show your thought process and product sense, especially if you’re asking questions to clarify business objectives, desired outcomes, and user needs.
Apply to product-adjacent roles
Since PM internships are highly competitive even if you have previous product experience, seeking internships that are related to the product development process or internships that use similar soft skills will still provide you with great experience and skills that can help you secure a PM internship for your next co-op. These include: CX, consulting, UX/UI design, business/product analyst, data analyst etc.
🧑💻 Thinking Like a PM:
In this last segment, we will leave you off with an activity to practice your analytical minds. In a Product Interview, you’ll often be asked questions in the format: Design X product for Y consumer. A general structure to answering this question is to ask any clarifying questions, identify the key user problems and objectives, and ideate design solutions to these user problems. Evaluate these solutions and prioritize features based on your business objective. Remember to show a user-centric mindset and product sense in these questions!
Feel free to reply with your answers!
